Micro-needling is a popular aesthetic procedure that involves using fine needles to create micro-injuries in the skin, which stimulates collagen and elastin production. Here are some questions my patients frequently ask me as their aesthetics GP about micro-needling:

What is Micro-needling?

Micro-needling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive treatment designed to improve the appearance of various skin issues such as fine lines, acne scars, stretch marks, and overall skin texture. At my practice in Ballito, my team of therapists and I use several different specialized devices with fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, promoting natural healing processes and collagen production.

How Does Micro-needling Work?

During the procedure, a sterile -needling device is glided over the skin. This creates tiny punctures that trigger the body's healing response, leading to increased collagen and elastin production. The treatment can be enhanced by applying growth factor serums or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) immediately after the procedure to further stimulate collagen production.

Is Micro-needling Painful?

Most of our patients report only mild discomfort during the procedure. In some cases, to minimize pain, we apply a topical numbing cream before treatment.

What Are the Benefits of Micro-needling?

  1. Collagen and Elastin Production: The primary benefit of micro-needling is the stimulation of collagen and elastin growth, which helps improve skin texture and firmness.

  2. Reduction of Scars and Hyperpigmentation: Micro-needling can effectively reduce the appearance of acne scars and hyperpigmentation by remodeling the skin and promoting an even skin tone.

  3. Enhanced Product Absorption: The micro-channels created during the procedure allow for better absorption of topical skincare products, making them more effective.

  4. Minimized Fine Lines and Wrinkles: Regular treatments can lead to a noticeable reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, contributing to a more youthful appearance.

  5. Suitable for All Skin Types: Micro-needling is generally safe for all skin types, including darker skin tones, where other treatments might pose a higher risk of pigmentation issues.

  6. Enhanced absorption of topical products due to increased skin permeability.

How Many Treatments Are Needed?

The number of treatments varies based on individual skin conditions and goals but I recommends a series of 3 to 6 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart for optimal results. Some patients may notice improvements after just one session, but the best results often appear several weeks after treatment as collagen continues to build. Further sessions are recommended through your skincare journey to maintain optimal long lasting results.

What Is the Downtime After Micro-needling?

Micro-needling typically involves minimal downtime. Our patients may experience redness and slight swelling, resembling a mild sunburn, which usually subsides within 24 hours. LED, light therapy can be applied to the skin after treatment which minimizes downtime and further enhances results. A pre and post home skincare protocol will also be advised on by Dr Karpath in order to optimize your skin barrier for best results during treatment. Generally, our patients return to their normal activities shortly after the procedure, although some may prefer to schedule treatments over weekends to allow for recovery.

Are There Any Risks or Side Effects?

While micro-needling is considered safe for all skin types, potential side effects include temporary redness, swelling, and minor discomfort. Serious complications are rare when the procedure is performed by a qualified professional in a clinical setting.

Who Should Avoid Micro-needling?

Micro-needling may not be suitable for individuals with certain health conditions, such as active skin infections, severe acne, or those on blood-thinning medications. Hence a consultation with a medical doctor (GP) as myself is essential to determine candidacy for the procedure. Micro-needling is a versatile treatment that can significantly enhance skin appearance and texture, making it a popular choice for many of our patients seeking an effective minimally invasive cosmetic solution.
