Dehydrated vs dry skin…..

As a doctor (GP) born and bred in sunny, humid Durban, its strange to think our skin could be dry or dehydrated. However, my patients in Ballito often come to me with these concerns.

We throw these terms around loosely without really understanding their meaning. This is important as it in turn will determine the treatments required.

Dry skin – is a skin type that lacks the oil produced by the sebum glands. It can be scaly, itchy and dull.

Dehydrated skin – is a skin condition where the skin lacks water content within the skin layers and is illustrated by the pinch test. Skin looks dull and has a loss of elasticity with surface wrinkles.

Treatment for each is different as we are targeting 2 different reasons for the skin changes.

Dry skin -

  • At our medical practice here in Ballito, skincare is the mainstay of treatment. Cleansers should be hydrating in a gel or cream formulation. Lipid-based nourishing moisturizers with urea will build the skin barrier and maintain the fatty layer of skin

  • Procedures - micro-needling with a rejuvenating cocktail builds the skin's barrier and maintains skin integrity.

Dehydrated skin -

  • Medical conditions - as a medical doctor, I treat all symptoms and concerns even related to skin with utmost care using evidence- based medicine. In this case, dehydration and conditions like thyroid disease are excluded and treated first as they can be the cause of your skin condition.

  • Hydrating skincare to lock in the moisture will be beneficial.

  • Procedures - hydrating cocktails delivered into the skin via micro-needling.

I do believe that by maintaining the skin integrity we reduce the signs of aging and ensure long-lasting healthy glowing skin translating to a healthier YOU.

One of the key aspects of maintaining skin health and youthfulness is preserving skin integrity. By taking care of the skin and protecting it from damage, you can effectively reduce the visible signs of aging. This includes wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, and sagging skin. When the skin's integrity is maintained, it can retain its elasticity and firmness, leading to a more youthful appearance.

Healthy skin not only looks good but also reflects overall well-being. When your skin is glowing and healthy, it can boost your confidence and self-esteem. Additionally, healthy skin is a reflection of a healthy lifestyle, including proper nutrition, hydration, and skincare habits. By investing in your skin health, you are investing in yourself and your overall wellness.

Furthermore, a skincare routine that focuses on maintaining skin integrity involves using products that nourish and protect the skin. This may include moisturizers, serums, sunscreen, and treatments that target specific skin concerns. My team and myself at our Ballito medical practice (Dr Harisha Karpath Aesthetic and General Medicine) will assist in incorporating these products into your daily regime, you can support your skin's natural functions and enhance its resilience against environmental stressors.

In conclusion, prioritizing skin integrity is essential for achieving long-lasting healthy and glowing skin. By caring for your skin and adopting a comprehensive skincare routine, you can not only reduce the signs of aging but also promote a radiant and youthful complexion. Remember, healthy skin is a reflection of a healthier you.
